After the very tragic events that occurred on Yonge Street this April, Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute and Bedford Park P.S. decided to collaborate to make an installation that would express the schools’ grief and hope to our community.
Led by Lawrence Park’s Wellness Council and Mrs. Davis’ class at Bedford, the two schools created a massive 8 ft by 11 ft poster with a scene of the Toronto skyline, the message: Lawrence Park C.I. and Bedford Park P.S. stand for peace, and close to 500 individual origami and cutout paper doves with student messages written on them.
The project was entirely voluntary, coordinated at recesses and lunches for all who wished to participate. The poster for peace now hangs at the TDSB headquarters at 5050 Yonge St., close to where the van incident took place.
Thank you very much to all the students who took precious time to make and decorate the doves, to the dedicated team of artists who assembled it, to the staff who provided supervision and encouragement throughout the project, and to Mrs. Mantia and Mr. Gorenkoff, the schools’ principals, for leading and coordinating.
And finally, thank you to Mr. Libera, the Central Co-ordinating Principal, who tirelessly searched for a home for the huge and beautiful work, and made our whole project real!
Your messages were heard, Bedford!
Thank you to our Grade 7 student Maslin B. for doing an outstanding job leading this initiative!
